Flat piercings are typically started with low-profile jewelry that sits comfortably against the surface of the ear.

Because the flat provides more surface area, it’s a great location for a wider range of designs, including clusters and more decorative pieces.
That said, starting with appropriately sized jewelry is important for healing. Larger or heavier designs are usually better introduced after the piercing has healed.
Rings are not typically used in this area due to the anatomy and placement.
