If you’re looking for a professional helix piercing in Staten Island or the NYC area, I offer safe, precise cartilage piercings using high-quality jewelry selected specifically for proper healing and long-term comfort.
I’m Paul, a professional body piercer with over 26 years of experience. Every piercing I perform is done with a focus on placement, jewelry selection, and long-term results.
What Is a Helix Piercing?
A helix piercing is placed through the outer cartilage of the ear, typically along the upper rim.
Helix piercings are extremely versatile and can be done as a single piercing or as part of a larger setup, including multiple helix piercings, stacked placements, or full ear curation projects.

Jewelry Options for Helix Piercings
Helix piercings are typically started with jewelry that remains stable and supports proper healing.
Common starter options include:
- Threadless titanium jewelry
- Internally threaded titanium jewelry
- Small gemstone or decorative ends
- Solid gold options when appropriate
I strongly recommend starting with jewelry that minimizes movement. Rings may seem appealing, but they tend to cause irritation during healing due to constant motion.
I know a lot of people want to switch to a hoop quickly, but this is something I regularly advise against. I’m usually telling clients to wait at least 8 months before wearing a hoop to avoid bumps, irritation, and prolonged healing.
Once fully healed, helix piercings can be styled with clicker rings, decorative pieces, chains, and more expressive jewelry depending on your overall setup.
I follow safety standards supported by the Association of Professional Piercers to ensure all jewelry and procedures meet professional guidelines.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Your appointment is handled in a clean, controlled environment. I’ll go over placement with you, mark the area, and make sure everything looks balanced before proceeding.
The piercing itself is quick, and I’ll guide you through each step so you feel comfortable throughout the process.

Pain Level & Healing Time
Helix piercings are generally considered moderate in terms of discomfort. Most clients describe it as a quick, sharp pinch followed by some pressure.
Healing typically takes around 6 to 12 months, as cartilage piercings require more time and care than soft tissue piercings.
Proper jewelry, downsizing, and aftercare all play a major role in how smoothly the piercing heals.
Aftercare Basics
Cartilage piercings require consistent aftercare and patience.
Basic aftercare includes:
- Cleaning with sterile saline solution
- Avoiding sleeping directly on the piercing
- Minimizing movement and irritation
- Timely downsizing, when advised
I’ll go over aftercare in detail during your appointment so you know exactly how to care for your piercing.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Helix Piercing
Helix piercings work well for most people, but placement and jewelry should always be chosen carefully.
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Want a versatile cartilage piercing
- Are willing to commit to a longer healing process
- Can avoid pressure from sleeping or headphones during healing
I’ll help determine the best placement and jewelry options to fit your ear’s anatomy and your overall goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most clients describe it as a sharp pinch followed by some pressure. Cartilage piercings can feel more intense than lobes but are very manageable.
Helix piercings typically take around 6 to 12 months to heal, depending on aftercare and lifestyle.
I recommend waiting until the piercing is fully healed before changing jewelry, unless you are coming in for a professional downsizing.
Most helix piercings should be downsized once swelling goes down, usually around 4 to 8 weeks.
