Let’s be honest. One of the most common fears about getting pierced is the pain. And because of that, I get asked this a lot:
“Can I numb the area before my piercing?”
The short answer is: technically yes, but it’s not recommended. And in most cases, it’s unnecessary. Let’s get into the details so you can make the most informed (and comfortable) decision.
💉 Topical Numbing Creams: Do They Work?
There are numbing creams on the market that use lidocaine or benzocaine to dull the sensation in the skin. These can work to a degree, especially for surface-level procedures like waxing or tattoos. But body piercing is a different experience.
Here’s why numbing creams aren’t ideal for piercings:
- They don’t penetrate deeply enough
Most piercing needles pass through layers of skin and tissue that topical creams can’t fully reach so they often don’t help much. - They can alter the skin’s texture
Creams can cause the skin to swell or feel rubbery, which makes it harder to pierce accurately and safely. That’s a big deal when precision is everything. - Risk of allergic reactions
Over-the-counter numbing creams can irritate sensitive skin or cause unexpected reactions. Especially when used improperly or without professional guidance.
😵💫 What About Injected Anesthetics?
In some countries, piercers are allowed to administer injectable numbing agents. In the U.S., however, that’s considered a medical procedure and is outside the legal scope of practice for professional piercers.
So if someone offers to numb you with a shot? That’s a red flag unless they’re a licensed medical professional.
🧠 Pain vs. Pressure: What It Actually Feels Like
I walk every client through what to expect. Most piercings feel like quick pressure or a sharp pinch; not long-lasting pain. And truthfully, the anticipation is usually worse than the actual moment.
I also:
- Walk you through breathing techniques
- Provide a calm, clean environment
- Work with you at your pace
You won’t be rushed or surprised. I believe in transparency and consent-based care, always.
🤝 There Are Things You Can Do to Make It Easier
You can totally take steps to make your piercing more comfortable, including:
- Getting enough rest the night before
- Eating a solid meal beforehand
- Staying hydrated
- Communicating with your piercer!
And if you’re really anxious, I can talk through your concerns and help you feel more in control. Sometimes, just understanding the process can reduce most of the fear.
💬 Final Thoughts
I don’t use numbing agents. Not because I don’t care about your comfort, but because they’re just not necessary for a well-done piercing. My clients are often surprised at how easy the process actually is.
