If you’ve got a piercing (or several), chances are this question has come up at some point. Especially if you’re facing a planned surgery or even a last-minute emergency procedure. So let’s talk about it: Will you need to remove your piercings before going under the knife?

The answer? Usually yes. But not always.

Let’s break it all down so you know what to expect and how to prepare.

🩺 Why Surgeons (and Hospitals) Ask You to Remove Piercings

Most of the time, medical staff ask you to remove piercings for three key reasons:

  1. Burn Risk from Electrocautery Devices
If your surgeon is using electrocautery (which is common in many surgeries to stop bleeding), metal jewelry can conduct electricity and cause burns at the piercing site.
  2. Interference with Medical Equipment
Jewelry can affect the readings of ECG/EKG monitors or imaging devices, and depending on where the jewelry is placed, it may be physically in the way during your procedure.
  3. Risk of Complications
There’s always a slight risk of jewelry getting caught, falling into a surgical site, or becoming contaminated during procedures.

🤕 So What Happens if I Can’t Remove It?

If you have a healing piercing, or a jewelry style that’s tricky to remove, you’re not totally out of luck. Some hospitals will allow non-metallic retainers. Especially for facial or oral piercings.

I stock glass retainers, which are:

  • Non-metallic
  • Biocompatible
  • MRI-safe
  • Suitable for surgery (in many cases)

But you must check with your surgical team ahead of time. Not all facilities allow retainers, and each surgeon has their own policy. If your team is okay with you wearing one, I can help you swap it in safely.

⏳ How Soon Before Surgery Should I Swap Jewelry?

I recommend at least 3-5 days ahead of your surgery to give your body time to adjust if you’re using a new material or style. You’ll want to ensure:

  • There’s no irritation or reaction to the retainer
  • It stays in securely
  • You’re comfortable before going under

🧠 What If the Piercing Closes?

This is one of the biggest fears I hear. And it’s valid, especially for fresh piercings. If your surgical team insists you remove the jewelry with no retainer allowed, here are a few tips:

  • Note the exact length, gauge, and jewelry style you were wearing
  • Have a professional (like me!) reinsert it ASAP after surgery
  • Don’t try to force it in yourself. Let me help avoid irritation or trauma

I’ve helped many clients successfully navigate surgery without losing their piercing.

💬 Final Thoughts

Every body is different, and so is every surgery. The most important thing is clear communication between you, your piercer, and your surgical team. If you’re local to NYC and have a surgery coming up, come in for a surgical consult appointment. I’ll talk you through your options, help insert retainers if needed, or remove jewelry professionally with care.
