Gold is timeless, elegant, and often seen as a luxury material. But is it safe for body piercings? If you’re thinking about adding a touch of gold to your piercing collection, it’s important to know what kind of gold is actually safe, and what to avoid.
I’m all about safe piercing practices and gorgeous jewelry. So here’s the full rundown on when gold is a good choice (and when it’s not).
🟡 Not All Gold is Created Equal
When people say “gold,” they could be talking about anything from solid, implant-safe gold to plated costume jewelry. Here’s what you need to know:
✅ Safe: Solid Gold, 14k-18k
- 14k or 18k gold is safe for healed and sometimes new piercings if it’s:
- Nickel-free
- Internally threaded or threadless
- From a reputable body jewelry manufacturer
- Polished to a mirror finish
- Meets ASTM or APP safety guidelines
Brands I carry and trust include:
- BVLA (Body Vision Los Angeles)
- Pupil Hall
- Anatometal
- Buddha Jewelry
I only carry solid 14k or 18k gold jewelry that’s ethically sourced, safe for wear, and appropriate for fresh and healed piercings alike.
🛑 Unsafe: Gold Plated or Filled Jewelry
- Gold plated, vermeil, or gold-filled jewelry is not safe for piercings. Ever.
- These styles have a thin layer of gold over a base metal, which can:
- Flake or chip off inside your body
- Expose mystery metals underneath
- Cause irritation or infections
- Break down in sterilization or bodily fluids
These might be fine for an earlobe piercing done with a gun at the mall (which we don’t recommend either), but they have no place in professional body piercing.
🧼 Is Gold Okay for New Piercings?
Yes. If it’s the right kind.
Most piercers will default to titanium or niobium for new piercings, but high-quality solid gold is also safe when used by a qualified piercer and verified to be:
- Free from nickel or alloys that could cause irritation
- Made to APP safety standards
- Properly sterilized and free of scratches
That’s why we thoroughly inspect and prep every gold piece before it goes into a piercing.
✨ Why Choose Gold?
Besides looking stunning, gold has a few major perks:
- Classic, timeless look. Perfect for special occasions or elevated everyday wear
- Hypoallergenic (if nickel-free)
- Durable when properly cared for
- Pairs beautifully with gemstones, opals, or diamonds
Gold pieces are also an incredible way to elevate your curated ear or facial piercing. I’m always happy to help you build your dream look.

TL;DR
- ✅ Safe: Solid 14k–18k gold, nickel-free, mirror-polished, made by trusted manufacturers
- ❌ Unsafe: Gold-plated, vermeil, gold-filled, mystery gold from fashion retailers
- Safe for new piercings if it’s from a pro piercer and proper brand
- I carry a full collection of safe, stunning gold jewelry in studio and online
Thinking about going gold? Make sure you’re choosing pieces that don’t just look beautiful; but are built to last, feel good, and will allow the piercing to heal properly.
