Let’s make this one real simple: please don’t. 🙅♂️
I get this question all the time and it’s usually because someone wants to make sure their piercing stays clean and bacteria-free. That’s valid! But unfortunately, using harsh products like rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide can do more harm than good when it comes to healing your new piercing.
🧬 Why It’s a Problem
Alcohol and peroxide are disinfectants. Great for cleaning surfaces or sanitizing tools, but not for healing wounds. A fresh piercing is a controlled wound, and it needs a gentle environment to heal properly.
Here’s what happens when you use these on a piercing:
- They kill healthy cells, not just bacteria.
- They dry out the skin, causing irritation and cracking.
- They prolong healing, sometimes even reversing progress.
- They can cause chemical burns in sensitive tissue.
🤕 It Can Make Things Worse
You might think, “But it stings, so it must be working!”
Unfortunately, that sting is your body saying ouch, not thank you. Using alcohol or peroxide on a healing piercing often leads to:
- Prolonged redness and swelling
- Excess crust or discharge
- Bumps and irritation
- Increased risk of scarring or rejection
✅ What to Use Instead
Your piercing doesn’t need to be “disinfected”. It just needs to stay clean and supported while your body heals it.
Here’s what I recommend:
- Sterile saline wound wash (available at the studio or most pharmacies)
- Clean, gentle rinsing in the shower
- Not touching or rotating the jewelry
Keep it simple. Keep it consistent.
