One of the most common questions I get from curious clients (or newer piercers) is about how a piercing is done. You might hear terms like “freehand” or “forceps” or “tool-free” floating around, but what do they actually mean? And is one way better than the other?

Let’s break it down.

Piercing with Tools

When most people think of professional piercing, they picture the use of tools; especially forceps or clamps. These instruments help hold and stabilize the tissue, guide the needle through in a specific path, and can be helpful in certain placements or anatomies.

There’s a misconception that using tools makes a piercing less advanced but that’s not true. In fact, many skilled and experienced piercers (myself included) use tools when the situation calls for it. Whether it’s a slippery tongue, a stubborn nipple, or a particularly tricky angle; tools can make all the difference in achieving a precise, safe result.

✅ Stabilization
✅ Predictable control
✅ Useful in high-tension areas or awkward piercings

Freehand Piercing

“Freehand” piercing means performing the piercing without using tools to hold the tissue in place. But don’t be fooled by the name; it’s not reckless or unstructured. Freehand piercing relies on controlled technique, tissue manipulation, and deep knowledge of anatomy.

I’ve spent years refining my freehand methods. It allows for a gentler approach in many cases, especially for clients with sensitive tissue or when minimizing pressure and bruising is a priority.

✅ Less pinching or squeezing
✅ Smooth transitions
✅ Often more comfortable for the client

Tool-Free Piercing

Now this is where the terms can get a little muddy. Some people use “tool-free” and “freehand” interchangeably, but they’re not always the same. Tool-free piercing typically means the piercer doesn’t use any tools at all—not even a receiving tube or taper pin.

This method demands a very confident and experienced hand. It’s often reserved for piercers who’ve developed deep tactile awareness and trust in their visual and spatial judgment.

✅ Minimal equipment
✅ Clean, efficient flow
✅ Requires advanced experience

So… Which Is Best?

Here’s the truth:
There is no “right” or “wrong” way to pierce.

There’s only what is safest, cleanest, and most accurate in the hands of that specific piercer.

Some piercers work exclusively with tools. Others work entirely tool-free. And many (like me) fall somewhere in between Adjusting our methods depending on the piercing, the anatomy, the jewelry, and the unique needs of the client.

What matters most is that your piercer:

🔹 Uses sterile technique
🔹 Has experience and control
🔹 Is working in a way that keeps you safe and delivers the best outcome for your body
