Understanding the difference between 14g and 12g jewelry can help you make smarter choices for healing, comfort, and long-term piercing health
These two gauges are some of the most common in professional body piercing. But what’s the real difference, and how does it affect your piercing?
I believe in educating clients about their choices, so let’s break it down in simple, real-world terms.
📏 What’s the Difference Between 14g and 12g Jewelry?
Gauge (g) refers to the thickness of your jewelry. The system can be a little confusing, but here’s the basic rule:
The lower the gauge number, the thicker the jewelry.
So:
- 14g = 1.6mm thick
- 12g = 2.0mm thick
That might not sound like a huge difference, but when it comes to body jewelry (especially in sensitive areas) even 0.4mm can make a noticeable impact.
🔄 When Would You Use 14g vs. 12g?
Here’s a quick guide based on piercing types and goals:
| Piercing | Common Gauge | 12g Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Navel | 14g | 12g offers added stability if anatomy allows |
| Nipple | 14g or 12g | 12g reduces migration risks for some |
| Tongue | 14g | 12g less common, but possible with experienced piercer |
| Genital | Often 12g+ | 12g is a solid standard here |
| Stretched Lobes | Varies | 12g may be a starting point for stretching |
| Bridge or Surface Work | 14g | 12g may improve stability with appropriate tissue |
I generally pierce nipple, navel, tongue and genital piercings at 12g unless your anatomy or goals suggest otherwise.
🧠 Why Go Thicker?
Here are a few reasons we might go with 12g instead of 14g:
- Increased stability: Helps minimize migration or irritation
- More jewelry options: Some custom or statement jewelry is only available in thicker gauges
- Improved healing: For certain anatomies, a thicker gauge can reduce pressure on tissue
- Stretching goals: 12g may be a step toward stretching to even larger sizes down the road
⚠️ Can You Switch From 14g to 12g?
Maybe, but not without care. You should never force thicker jewelry into a 14g piercing without help from a pro.
If your piercing is healed and healthy, I can talk about stretching to 12g safely and gradually. I use tools and techniques to make that process as comfortable and healthy as possible. And yes; sometimes the answer is “no,” if your anatomy won’t tolerate it.

TL;DR
- 14g = 1.6mm, 12g = 2.0mm
- 12g is thicker and may offer more stability
- Not all piercings are suited for 12g. It depends on anatomy and healing
- Always consult your piercer before switching
