How to Insert Threadless Jewelry Safely (Step-by-Step Guide)

I carry a wide range of threadless body jewelry from trusted brands like NeoMetal, Anatometal, BVLA, Buddha Jewelry, and more. Clients often love the clean look and ease of threadless jewelry. Once they get the hang of how to insert it properly.

Whether you’re changing out a healed piercing or trying to reinsert a top that popped off, here’s everything you need to know.

🧠 First, What Is Threadless Jewelry?

Threadless jewelry consists of two parts:

  • The post (the part that goes through the piercing)
  • The decorative top (which has a small pin on the back)

The pin is slightly bent. When it’s pushed into the post, the tension between the bend and the hollow post keeps everything securely in place.

Think of it like a spring-loaded fit. No screws, no twisting, just push and pop.

✋ Before You Start: A Few Reminders

  • Only insert jewelry into healed piercings. If you’re not sure whether you’re fully healed, come in for a check-up.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your jewelry or piercing.
  • Work over a clean, flat surface (bonus if it’s a towel!) so you don’t lose tiny pieces.
  • If you’re ever unsure, don’t force it! Book an appointment and I’ll be happy to help.

🧷 Step-by-Step: How to Insert Threadless Jewelry

1. Inspect your jewelry.
Make sure both the post and the decorative top are clean and free of debris. You can gently clean them with saline and let them air dry.

2. Bend the pin slightly (if needed).
Most threadless tops come pre-bent. If your top is straight and keeps falling out, you may need to bend the pin just a little. Use two pairs of jewelry pliers (or I can do it for you!) bend about 5-10° near the base of the pin.

3. Hold the post steady.
Insert the post into your piercing channel gently. If it doesn’t slide in easily, don’t force it! The piercing may not be healed, or the angle might be off.

4. Push in the top.
Line up the pin with the post and push it in until it’s snug. You should feel a little resistance. If it wiggles or pops out, remove the top, add a slightly stronger bend, and try again.

❗ Troubleshooting Tips

  • If the top won’t go in: Check that the pin is bent enough. If not, it won’t create the necessary tension.
  • If the post won’t go in: Make sure you’re inserting from the correct direction and that you’re using the right length/gauge for your piercing.
  • If the top pops off easily: The bend may be too slight. You’ll need to add more angle for a tighter fit.

🔧 Not Comfortable Doing It Yourself?

Totally fair. Threadless jewelry can be tricky the first few times. If your piercing is in a hard-to-reach spot (like a conch or nostril), or you’re nervous about losing the top, I’m here to help.

Just book a check-up appointment at book.ipricku.com, and I’ll make sure everything fits perfectly. I’ll even teach you how to do it yourself, step-by-step.

💬 Pro Tip: Always buy high-quality jewelry from a reputable studio (like me). Poorly made threadless pieces can be inconsistent in fit and hard to manage, especially during healing.
