Whether you’re heavily pierced or just have a single nostril ring, heading into an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) appointment can bring up a lot of questions: Can I leave my jewelry in? Will it interfere with the scan? Is it safe?

I help clients navigate situations like this all the time. Here’s what you need to know when it comes to MRIs and your body piercings.

What Is an MRI and Why Does Jewelry Matter?

MRIs use a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the body. Because of that magnetic force, any metal inside or on the body must be evaluated for safety.

While most body jewelry is made from non-magnetic materials (like implant-grade titanium or niobium), some alloys or lower-quality metals can react to the MRI’s magnetic field, potentially causing discomfort or image distortion.

Can I Keep My Piercings In for an MRI?

It depends. Here’s what typically determines whether you need to remove your jewelry:

  • Location of the MRI scan: If your piercing is nowhere near the area being imaged, some facilities may allow you to leave it in.
  • Material of your jewelry: Implant-grade titanium and niobium are generally MRI-safe, but many hospitals have strict policies and may still request removal.
  • Facility protocols: Some radiology centers require all body jewelry to be removed, regardless of material or placement.

When in doubt, call ahead and ask your imaging center what their policy is.

What If I Can’t Remove My Piercing or Don’t Want It to Close?

I get it. Removing jewelry can be a hassle, especially for newer piercings that are still healing or prone to closing. That’s where glass retainers come in.

I personally stock glass retainers from Gorilla Glass, a highly reputable company that makes biocompatible, non-metallic jewelry. These retainers:

  • Are safe for MRI and other scans
  • Won’t interfere with imaging
  • Come in a variety of sizes and styles to fit different piercings
  • Are suitable for both healed and healing piercings (with guidance)

I’m happy to help you swap your jewelry for retainers before your appointment and reinsert your original jewelry afterward, safely and hygienically.

Can I Put My Jewelry Back In Right After the MRI?

If your piercing is well-healed and the removal was brief, you should be able to reinsert your jewelry without issue. But:

  • Don’t force anything—if you’re having trouble getting jewelry back in, contact your piercer for help.
  • Have a backup plan—carry saline, clean hands, and maybe even a taper or insertion tool (or just come visit me).
  • Be cautious with fresh piercings—if your piercing is still in the early stages of healing, consult with me before trying to remove anything yourself.

Final Thoughts

While body piercings and MRIs can coexist, it’s important to plan ahead. Use high-quality jewelry, know your imaging center’s rules, and have a professional piercer in your corner to support you.
