This is one of those questions I get. Especially from clients who are traveling soon after getting a new piercing, or who are fully loaded with jewelry and wondering if they’re going to hold up the TSA line.
So, let’s talk about what really happens when you go through airport security with piercings.
🧲 Will My Piercings Set Off Metal Detectors?
Usually, no. Most body jewelry is made from materials that don’t trigger airport metal detectors. That includes:
- Implant-grade titanium (ASTM F-136)
- Niobium
- 14k-18k gold
- Biocompatible plastics (like PTFE or Bioplast)
- Glass
These are all lightweight, non-ferrous materials. Meaning they’re not magnetic and generally don’t cause a blip in standard walk-through detectors.
Stainless steel, depending on the grade and the size of the jewelry, might set something off, but even then it’s rare.
🧍♀️ What About Full-Body Scanners?
In most modern airports, you’ll go through a millimeter wave scanner. That’s the pod you stand in with your arms up. These scanners are looking for shapes and anomalies, not just metal. And sometimes, that includes piercings.
Things that might get flagged for a closer look:
- Large gauge jewelry
- Jewelry with dangly attachments
- Certain genital piercings
- Multiple piercings clustered in one area
But 99% of the time, you’ll just walk through with no issue whatsoever.
💬 What If I Do Get Flagged?
If something does get flagged, a TSA agent may ask to pat down the area or pull you aside for a secondary screening. You do not have to remove your jewelry on the spot; and they shouldn’t ask you to.
If you’re concerned, you can let the agent know in advance that you have body jewelry and where it’s located. This helps avoid confusion, especially if you have intimate piercings.
🔄 Can I Remove My Jewelry to Avoid Issues?
You can but it’s not usually necessary. In fact, if your piercing is still healing, removing jewelry before a flight is not recommended. You risk irritation, closure, or other complications while you’re mid-travel.
If you’re flying shortly after getting pierced, talk to your piercer about non-metallic retainers. I personally stock glass retainers that are perfect for temporary visibility concerns or travel-related anxiety.
🛫 Travel Tips for Pierced Folks
- ✈️ Give yourself extra time at security just in case.
- 💍 Stick with lightweight, snug jewelry for travel days.
- 💼 Pack a travel-sized aftercare spray for long-haul flights.
- 💌 Bring a note from your piercer if you have a ton of piercings or medical concerns.
- 🔄 Consider swapping to retainers if you have concerns or are traveling internationally where policies might differ.
👋 TL;DR: No, You’re Not a Walking Alarm
Your piercings probably won’t set anything off. And even if they do, it’s a minor moment that doesn’t require removal or embarrassment. You’re not alone. Lots of people fly with tons of jewelry on the daily.
