This is one of the more nuanced and personal questions I get:
“Can I get a piercing through scar tissue?”
And like most things in the piercing world… the answer is: it depends.
Let’s break it down so you can better understand how scar tissue impacts new piercings. And when it’s actually okay to go through it.
🧬 What Is Scar Tissue?
When the body experiences trauma (whether that’s from a piercing gone wrong, an injury, or surgery) it repairs itself by forming scar tissue. This tissue is denser, less flexible, and has reduced blood flow compared to unscarred skin.
Not all scar tissue is the same. Some scars are soft and flat, while others might be thick, raised, or even keloided. All of this affects whether or not you can pierce the area again.
✅ When It Might Be Okay
You can pierce through scar tissue in certain situations. Especially if:
- The scar is soft and fully healed (usually 6-12 months minimum)
- There’s no keloid formation or raised hypertrophic tissue
- You’re working with a piercer who takes anatomy and placement seriously
- You understand that healing could be slower or more unpredictable
I always start with an in-person consultation before considering this kind of piercing. It’s the only way to really assess what’s going on beneath the surface.
🚫 When It’s Not Recommended
I don’t recommend piercing through scar tissue if:
- The area has a history of rejection or migration
- The scar is still raised, irritated, or itchy
- There’s active inflammation or signs of breakdown
- You’re prone to keloid formation (a big red flag for re-traumatizing the area)
In these cases, re-piercing could just lead to more trauma, more scarring, or another failed piercing attempt.
🔍 What About Stretching or Repairing the Area First?
Sometimes we can prep an area over time:
- Scar massage and topical treatments can improve pliability
- In some cases, dermatologists or body modification professionals can help with scar revision
- Alternative placements may be a better choice if the original spot is no longer viable
I’ll always go over all these possibilities with you during your visit.
💡 My Philosophy
Just because something can be pierced doesn’t mean it should be.
I’m not here to make a quick buck. I’m here to make sure your piercings last, heal beautifully, and feel like an empowering part of your body. If that means saying “no” to piercing through a scar, I’ll always be honest about it. But I’ll also help you find alternatives that still honor your vision.
Ready for a Check-In?
If you’re considering re-piercing an area with scar tissue, let’s talk about it in person.

Your anatomy tells a story. Let’s work with it, not against it. 💙
