Belly button piercing after surgery is a common question I get from clients with tummy tucks, hernia repairs, or scars near the navel. So you might be wondering: Is it still safe (or possible) to get pierced?

I get this question sometimes so here’s everything you need to know before booking that appointment.

🧬 Scar Tissue & Piercing: What’s the Deal?

Scar tissue isn’t bad, but it’s different.

When your body heals from surgery or injury, it creates collagen-rich tissue that’s less flexible, less vascular, and sometimes more sensitive than surrounding skin. This can affect:

  • How well the piercing heals
  • Placement options
  • Jewelry fit
  • Whether the piercing will be stable long-term

👩‍⚕️ Have You Had a Tummy Tuck, Laparoscopy, or Hernia Surgery?

Each type of surgery impacts the area differently:

  • Tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) often reposition or reshape the belly button. The new location may not have the same tissue structure as before.
  • Laparoscopy scars (small incisions near the belly button) may not interfere. But every scar is different.
  • Hernia surgeries can create internal tension or layered scar tissue that might make the area more prone to rejection.

This is why I always recommend an in-person consultation to check out your anatomy and see what’s possible.

🔍 What I Look for

During your consultation, I’ll examine:

  • The location and density of the scar
  • Mobility and tension in the tissue
  • Belly button shape and natural fold
  • Healing potential based on age of the scar

I’ll only proceed if I feel it’s safe, viable, and aesthetically appropriate. And if it’s not, I’ll explain why and talk through alternatives.

⏳ How Long Should I Wait After Surgery?

I typically recommend waiting at least 1 year after surgery, sometimes longer.

Why? Even if a scar looks healed on the outside, internal tissue could still be remodeling for many months. Rushing in could result in:

  • Piercing migration or rejection
  • Chronic irritation
  • Delayed healing
  • Potential keloid formation

🤔 What If I Already Had a Navel Piercing Before Surgery?

If you had a piercing before your surgery, I’ll check:

  • If the old fistula (channel) is still open
  • Whether scar tissue has closed or distorted the area
  • If it’s possible to re-open or re-pierce the site

Sometimes I can work with the existing anatomy. Other times, I may recommend starting fresh or skipping it altogether if the area isn’t ideal.

💎 Jewelry & Placement Considerations

In these cases, I often opt for:

  • High-quality implant-grade titanium or gold
  • Curved barbells with extra length to accommodate swelling
  • Careful angle adjustment to avoid pressure or pulling

Healing times may also be a bit longer due to scar sensitivity.

🚫 When I Might Say No

As much as I want you to have your dream piercing, I’ll always prioritize your safety. I may decline a navel piercing if:

  • The scar is too dense or keloid-prone
  • There’s not enough loose skin or a natural fold
  • Previous piercing trauma makes healing unlikely
  • There’s ongoing tension or discomfort in the area

If that’s the case, I’ll discuss other piercing ideas that are viable for your body.

TL;DR

  • Yes, you might still be able to get a belly piercing after surgery. It depends on your unique anatomy.
  • Wait at least a year post-op.
  • Book an in-person consultation before making any decisions.
  • I’ll only pierce if it’s safe and sustainable for your body.
