When can I change my jewelry? Many clients ask this as they finish the initial healing phase of their piercing.
Changing your piercing jewelry is one of the most exciting parts of the healing journey. You’ve gone through the initial healing phase, you’re ready to show off your personal style; and then you pause.
“Wait… Am I actually ready to change this?”
Let’s talk about how to know when it’s safe to switch things up, and why waiting matters.
🕒 Healing Times and When to Change Your Jewelry
Every piercing has a general healing timeline, but just because the calendar says so doesn’t mean your body agrees.
| Piercing | Average Full Healing Time |
|---|---|
| Earlobe | 2-4 months |
| Nostril | 6-12 months |
| Helix / Cartilage | 6-12 months |
| Septum | 2-4 months |
| Navel | 9-12 months |
| Nipple | 9-12+ months |
| Genital | Varies — always ask! |
The key here: These are healing averages, not guarantees. Factors like your anatomy, lifestyle, immune system, aftercare routine, and even your sleep position can affect your healing rate.
🔍 Signs Your Piercing Is Ready for a Jewelry Change
✅ No pain, crust, or discharge
✅ No swelling, redness, or tenderness
✅ The piercing moves freely and comfortably
✅ You’ve had a follow-up consultation with your piercer
Even if your piercing feels healed, I always recommend a professional check-in before you swap jewelry for the first time. Especially if you’re doing it yourself.
⚠️ Risks of Changing Jewelry Too Early
Changing your jewelry too soon can:
- Tear the fistula (the channel your body forms)
- Introduce bacteria and increase risk of infection
- Cause swelling or trauma
- Lead to migration or rejection
Worse yet, you might not be able to get the jewelry back in and now you’re dealing with a shrinking, irritated piercing.
💎 Professional Jewelry Change Services
I only change jewelry in piercings that I’ve verified as ready. If you didn’t get pierced here, that’s totally fine. You’re still welcome to come in for a jewelry change consultation.
✨ I offer:
- Jewelry changes with sterile tools
- Insertion assistance for tricky pieces (like threadless ends or clickers)
- Beautiful options from BVLA, Pupil Hall, Buddha Jewelry, and more
I’ll also give you honest feedback ; even if it’s “hey, give it another few months.”
