Let’s talk honestly about pain and piercings.

It’s one of the first questions nearly everyone asks when they’re thinking about getting pierced:
“Does it hurt?”

Short answer? Yes. But probably not in the way you’re imagining. Let’s break it down so you can walk in with confidence and realistic expectations.

Pain Is Subjective. But You’re Gonna Be Okay!

Pain is different for everyone. What one person shrugs off, another might find super intense. I’ve pierced folks who barely blink, and others who’ve needed a minute to breathe through it. And both are completely valid.

The truth is, most piercings are over in seconds. The build-up is usually worse than the actual experience. If you’ve ever stubbed your toe or gotten a shot at the doctor, you’ve already survived worse pain than most piercings.

What Influences How Much It Hurts?

  • Location matters – Some areas (like the lobes or nostrils) have fewer nerve endings and are typically easier to handle. Others (like nipples or cartilage) can pack more of a punch.
  • Your mindset – If you’re anxious or tense, your body is already on high alert. Deep breathing and staying calm can make a huge difference.
  • Your piercer’s technique – This is a big one. A skilled, experienced piercer with good bedside manner (hey, that’s me!) will be fast, clean, and focused on minimizing discomfort.
  • Your anatomy – Sometimes anatomy affects how easy or complex a piercing will be. I always assess this beforehand and let you know what to expect.

What About After the Piercing?

Soreness and tenderness are normal for a few days after the piercing. It might feel like a bruise or mild pressure, especially if the area gets bumped. But this generally fades quickly, especially if you’re following your aftercare instructions (which I’ll go over with you in detail before you leave the studio).

Disclaimers & Real Talk

  • No part of the piercing process is designed to be traumatic. You should always feel safe, respected, and informed. If you’re not, you’re at the wrong studio.
  • If you’re especially nervous about pain, don’t hesitate to let me know. I’m here to support you, not rush you through it.
  • I don’t recommend numbing products without guidance. They can interfere with technique, accuracy, or your body’s response to the piercing.

Final Thoughts

Yes, piercings hurt. But not enough to stop thousands of people from coming back for more. It’s fast, it’s clean, and when I perform a piercing it’s done with care, precision, and kindness.
