One of the most common aftercare conversations I have with clients is about downsizing—and no, I’m not talking about your apartment or your closet. I’m talking about your body jewelry, and why swapping it for a shorter post at the right time is crucial for healing.

What is Downsizing?

Downsizing refers to switching the initial, longer post used for swelling to a shorter piece of jewelry once the piercing has stabilized. When I first pierce you, I use jewelry with extra length to accommodate swelling, prevent pressure on the tissue, and reduce the risk of irritation or embedding.

But that longer post? It’s not meant to be forever.

Why Does Downsizing Matter?

Leaving in jewelry that’s too long for too long can lead to a variety of issues, including:

  • Snagging on clothes, towels, hair, or masks
  • Shifting or angling of the piercing channel
  • Irritation bumps
  • Prolonged healing time
  • Migration or rejection, especially in more sensitive piercings

I’ve seen firsthand how something as simple as properly timed downsizing can mean the difference between a smooth, happy heal—or months of frustrating setbacks.

When Should You Downsize?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer (because piercing is anatomy-specific), but we typically recommend clients come in to downsize 4-8 weeks after the initial piercing, depending on the location and how your body is healing. Cartilage piercings may take longer to settle, while soft tissue piercings often stabilize faster.

I require appointments for all services. You can text 347-770-7653 to set one up. Messages are checked between 11:00 AM and 9:00 PM EST Monday – Saturday, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Please bring your ID and arrive on time—we want to make sure we have enough time to give your piercing the attention it deserves!
